Breast Care and Diagnostic Center

The William and Martha Johns Diagnostic Center at AMMC offers the latest digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and bone densitometry as part of our commitment to provide quality, compassionate healthcare.

An estimated 400,000 women in Arkansas have never had a mammogram.  The American Cancer Society cites breast cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer after skin cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women in the United States. In addition to self-exams, the national Centers for Disease Control estimates that early detection through screening mammograms can reduce mortality from breast cancer by approximately 20-35 percent in women aged 50-69, and approximately 20 percent in women aged 40-49.  Breast cancer is not exclusive to women and can occur with men as well.  Although breast cancer is 100 times more common in women, cases in men are usually detected between the ages of 60 and 70.  The condition, however, can develop in men of any age.

Digital Mammography and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy are two of our latest tools available right here at Arkansas Methodist to help detect breast cancer. 

Bone Density is a way of measuring the strength of your bones by testing how dense they are. Osteoporosis is one disease that results in bone loss, making bones thin and brittle. It affects about 10 million people nationwide, but with early detection, can be treated. This test takes about ten minutes. It is a safe and painless exam.

You could be at risk for Osteoperosis if you:

  • are a post-menopausal female
  • have a family history of Osteoporosis
  • eat a diet low in Calcium
  • smoke or drink heavily
  • have Cushing's Syndrome or Diabetes
  • take corticosteroids or thyroid medications
  • have had abnormal x-rays or uncharacteristic features
