Dr. Sam Bakshian - Professional Profile
Dr. Sam Bakshian is at the forefront of innovation in the field of spinal surgery. Dr. Bakshian received his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA at the age of 18. He then went on to receive his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1992.
After completing medical school Dr. Bakshian was accepted by the USC School of Medicine Department of Orthopedics where he completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at LA County and USC Hospitals. From early on in his training Dr. Bakshian was fascinated by the complexities of the spine, and thus he chose to do additional training in spinal surgery. This Fellowship training in spinal surgery was performed at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI). By the age of 28, Dr. Bakshian was amongst the youngest fellowship trained spinal surgeons trained in the United States. Dr. Bakshian now practices at Olympia Medical Center.
As a practicing surgeon at Olympia, Dr. Bakshian specializes in spinal surgeries that relieve pressure on the neural elements, and restore stability and function to the spine. Dr. Bakshian is continually pioneering and is actively involved in clinical trials, with emphasis on surgical techniques that preserve spinal motion.
Dr. Bakshian is accomplished in the many varied techniques within the spinal surgery field, including, but not limited to, Anterior Cervical Discectomy Fusion, Laminectomy, Discectomy, Spinal Fusion, Kyphoplasty, Endoscopic Discectomy, Endoscopic Fusion, Endoscopic Laser Assisted Microdiscectomy, Artificial disc replacement, motion preservations surgery, and minimally invasive surgery to minimize collateral damage, to name a few.
With membership in the North American Spine Society, California Orthopedic Association, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Medical Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Bakshian speaks at academic meetings and keeps up with the latest information in the world of orthopedics and spinal surgery. Dr. Bakshian has been at the forefront of minimally invasive spinal surgery and endoscopic techniques as well as minimally invasive spinal fusions. He specializes in the surgical treatment of disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He has special interest in the surgical treatment of disorders of the cervical spine as well as revision surgeries after previously failed spinal surgery. He considers himself a true patient advocate.
Dr. Bakshian is certified as a qualified Medical Examiner in Orthopedics. He is an Active Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at Olympia Medical Center and a co-director of the Los Angeles Center for Spine Care and Research at Olympia Medical Center. He has attended numerous advanced certification courses, including Advanced Management of the Cervical Spine, Live Spinal Surgery Course – New Techniques, Advanced Spine Techniques and Techniques for Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion, among others. Dr. Bakshian has also been involved in various research projects during his training at SCOI, USC, Orthopedic Hospital, Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center, and The Reed Neurologic Center.
