Your Care

Identification Band
You will be required to wear an identification band during your stay. This helps ensure you will receive the proper treatments and medications. Please do not remove the band for any reason as it is an important means of identification while you are at the hospital. If the band is too tight, please alert your nurse and a new band will be issued to you. If you wear a medical alert bracelet, please keep it on while you are in the hospital.

Activities
Please discuss your activity level with your nurse or physician in case you have restrictions ordered. Your nurse also can tell you what type of activities, such as bathing, are best for your condition.

Standard Precautions for Your Safety
Physicians, nurses and other hospital employees may be wearing medical gloves as they work with you. They will wash their hands and use clean gloves before they care for you. These “standard precautions” are used with all patients and all types of conditions. They prevent the spread of germs and protect you, your family, other patients and hospital staff from the risk of infection.

Food Service
Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of your treatment and recovery. Flagstaff Medical Center makes every effort to provide nutritious meals that are prepared according to your physician’s orders and your preference. Patients are served breakfast between 7 and 8 a.m., lunch between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and dinner between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Occasionally, your meal may be delayed if you are scheduled for a special test or treatment. Whenever possible, you will be served after your treatment or test. If family members or friends want to eat in your room with you, they may bring in a meal (unless you are in isolation or receiving chemotherapy). Our Cafeteria is located on the first floor of the East Campus for their convenience.

Nutrition assistants will visit patients in the morning to obtain the patients’ lunch selections and in the afternoon for dinner and the following day’s breakfast selections. The assistant will record selections electronically or paper menus can be provided. If you have difficulty making menu selections, a member of the Nutrition Services department will be happy to help you. Call ext. 13060 for assistance. If you are on a special diet prescribed by your physician, you will receive menus tailored to your specific needs.

Advance Directives
An Advance Directive is a document that gives direction to medical providers when patients can no longer make healthcare decisions for themselves. Types of Advance Directives include pre-hospital medical care directives, healthcare powers of attorney, living wills and mental healthcare powers of attorney.

You will be asked during the registration process if you have signed an Advance Directive. The question is not a reflection of your clinical status; it is based on FMC’s belief in the importance of your authority to make your own healthcare decisions. If you do not have an Advance Directive but would like to execute one, forms are available by calling Patient Registration at extension 13470 or Care Coordination at ext. 12220.

Isolation
If your physician has determined additional precautions are necessary, you may be placed in an isolation room for a period of time. For the protection of our patients and staff we ask you to limit your movement throughout the hospital. Only close family members will be allowed to visit and must go to the nurses’ station for important instructions before entering your room. All visitors 12 years and older, are required to follow the same isolation guidelines as our healthcare workers. If the visitor is younger than 12 years old and does not live with the patient, we recommend they do not visit while the patient is in isolation.

Sunflowers For Your Safety
At Flagstaff Medical Center, we have taken extra steps to ensure the safety of our patients, including persons of size or those individuals who feel they may need a little extra support. Look for sunflower stickers on bathroom stalls and public furniture to indicate this furniture and equipment is safe for those who need additional support.
